A Tale of Two Subways

Looking through my archived photos, I came across two similar shots that I’ve taken in the past year of two different subway stations. The first is the Peachtree Center MARTA Station in Atlanta, GA. The second is the Capitol South Metro Station in Washington, DC. The Peachtree Center MARTA Station was opened in 1982 and was designed by Architect Joseph Amisano. It was tunneled out of solid gneiss rock, of which you can see along the walls. I made use of this subway station when I was in Atlanta back in…

Ben Sandler’s Tomorrowland

Paris-based photographer Ben Sandler took Alvar Aalto’€™s Maison Carr and used it as a set for his latest photo shoot called Tomorrowland. Inspired by AMC’€™s Mad Men, Sandler says, €œI really appreciate the design and decoration and style in that series. It’€™s spot on. And in using Aalto’€™s house, which was commissioned by an art dealer in 1956 and has since been preserved beautifully and converted into a museum. Sandler and his crew rented the house for a couple days. The lighting and furniture…

Revisiting Film Photography

It’€™s been more than ten years since I last loaded a roll of film into a camera and made some pictures. Last week, I found two reasons to try it again. The first reason? I rediscovered my father’€™s Nikon FM: Nikon D700 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G It’s the original Nikon FM, made in the late 1970s (production ended in the early 80s). All mechanical, all manual, with a center weighted meter and shutter speeds up to 1/1000. Beautifully made. This classic…

Thoughts on Becoming a Photographer

I’m beginning to lose track of how many guest posts I’ve featured on JIT, but it’s a great thing! The blog is also becoming more photography-oriented, which is fine by me too. Today’s post comes from Kim Akrigg, who’s written about the interesting and somewhat atypical story of how she became a photographer. Kim comes from my hometown of Vancouver, so be good to her! When I was younger I liked to draw, so my mother put me into art classes. I painted, sketched, and sculpted my way through my earlier years…

Top Athlete Facial Hair (A Retrosopective)

It should be fairly obvious by now that I’m a pretty big supporter of facial hair. Hell, the reason I hold onto it is because it’s simply one of the few vestiges of masculinity I’ve got (but that’s another much, much longer discussion for another day). For athletes, though, it’s not for masculinity – they already have that – it’s for intimidation, or for unity. After I saw are 5 of my favorites: 5. Carlos Valderrama This one is often overlooked because of Valderrama’s classically ridiculous hair, but in…
